Practitioner

Start your team coaching study here.

In partnership with Clutterbuck Coaching and Mentoring International (CCMI), we present the Practitioner program, the starting point for anyone wanting to become a team coach. It aims to ensure competency and confidence in extending coaching approaches to helping teams become more effective and develop the capability to coach themselves. The context is coaching teams in the workplace, with particular emphasis on executive teams and project teams, although the tools, techniques and theory also apply to other forms of team. This program covers:

  • Developing yourself as a team coach

  • Supporting and working with the team leader

  • Understanding Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS)

  • Flexing different modes of working with teams

  • Contracting and Psychological Safety

  • Using the PERILL model and diagnostic with teams

  • Defining the issues and goal setting

  • Making team decisions

  • Working with a co-coach, stakeholders and/or client sponsor

  • Learning the team coaching and team engagement processes

Pre-requisites

  • You will have a solid foundation of experience and expertise in one-to-one coaching and want to add team coaching to your portfolio.

  • You could also have previous team coaching experience and have facilitated teams or groups

  • Not required, but GTCI Gateway program could have been completed

Course requirements

This program is a European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC) Global Team Coaching Training Quality Award (TCQA) program (TCQA20200005) and 40.5 (36.5 CC & 4 RD) International Coach Federation (ICF) Continuing Coach Education (CCE) hours, as such you will have specific elements to complete. If you are interested in attaining an Accreditation, you will have the learning requirements to apply for the EMCC Team Coaching Practitioner if you complete the requirements.

  • Team to practice on during the program – to apply the learning as you go, you need to have 2 teams of at least 4 people (4 sessions per team). The team could be a pro-bono team such as a school or church committee, on-going team, not-for-profit or agile teams, etc. Does not need to be a ‘typical’ paying client, choose a team that will benefit from you practicing new techniques and making mistakes, preferably with a co-coach. For planning purposes, you will have learned the team coaching processes and materials no later than session 5, and need to have the majority of the team coaching completed by your final assignment. Please use the program dates for your cohort to contract with your client about when to start and complete the team coaching.

  • Preferred – team coaching with a co-coach on your or their practice team. Opportunities can be for you to pair up with someone from the course.

  • 6 - 10 hours pre-work prior to program commencement, including reading, watching videos of David Clutterbuck and Tammy Turner coach a team throughout the entire coaching journey, and completing a team coach development plan.

  • A final short answer assignment based on your reflective journal examining yourself as a team coach and at least one team coaching engagement where you applied the techniques, models and tools from the program.

  • Anticipate 1 – 2 hours in between course sessions for preparatory work

FAQ's

How will this program help me integrate team coaching into my current practice?

You'll discover how to pinpoint areas where team coaching can enhance your existing work. Even if you are an experienced team coach, this workshop will enhance and extend your capabilities, so our graduates report. Through hands-on workshops and real-world case studies, you'll gain practical skills, tools and strategies that seamlessly blend into your current team interactions, helping you transition smoothly to a team coaching approach or extend what you’re already doing with teams.

How is this program different from other team coaching courses?

This program dives deep into the PERILL Model of team functioning, providing a robust understanding of team dynamics. You'll explore an adaptive systemic approach tailored for today’s complex world, creating real value in your coaching practice. Engage in interactive sessions with industry experts and receive personalised feedback, ensuring you can effectively apply your newfound knowledge. Plus, our smaller class sizes foster meaningful connections between participants and faculty, enhancing your learning experience.

What support is available during and after the program?

Participants gain access to an international network of experienced team coaches for ongoing support, cultivating an eclectic community where you can share insights and experiences. Additionally, you’ll enjoy 12 months of complimentary membership to both the CCMI library and the unlimited use of the PERILL Team Diagnostic diagnostic, providing invaluable resources for your continued professional development.

Is the program accredited?

Absolutely! Our training is accredited by both the EMCC and ICF, ensuring you receive a recognised qualification upon completion. The EMCC TCQA is integrated into the program, and once you finish all course requirements, you'll be recommended for both EIA and ITCA certifications (meaning you’ll become both an Accredited individual and team coach at the practitioner level, should you apply, if you’re new to EMCC). For ICF accreditation, there are a few extra steps involving a small fee and additional assignments, including a webinar.

How is the program structured?

The course consists of a 90-minute orientation session and 8x 3-hour online sessions, typically accommodating 8 - 16 delegates. This format encourages individual and group reflection, creating a balanced learning environment that promotes participation and personal growth.

How many hours are required for the program in total?

Completed over 3-4 months, the 152 hours in total are made up of 18 hours of training, 40 hours of reading (theory and models), 60 hours of preparation, planning and practice with at least your teams with the remainder split across reflection and the assignment

Do I have to attend all 8 plenary sessions?

You can only miss 2 live plenary sessions throughout the program duration. If you miss more, individual make up sessions can be held at an additional fee.

Will the plenary sessions be recorded?

Yes. All sessions will be recorded and saved for your on-going learning throughout the program and for a short period of time afterward. It will be up to each participant to watch any missed sessions and check in with their learning groups to embed the learning and ask questions.

How many teams will I need to practice on?

You must have at least 2 teams who you will coach 4 sessions minimum for the program. A team is greater than 4 people and no more than 10. The purpose of the practice team is to embed the learning from the program drawing upon the tools, models and techniques. You must have the team ready to start no later than session 4.

What are the requirements to complete the program?

A final short answer assignment based on your reflective journal examining yourself as a team coach and at least one team coaching engagement where you applied the techniques, models and tools from the program. The essay will take approximately 3 hours to complete and will be due approximately 3 months after the final plenary session. It will be based around your insights and learning from both the program and your practice with your teams.
